Amazon Seller Onboarding in India: The 2026 Step-by-Step Guide
Everything you need to launch your brand on Amazon India — from GST to your first sale. Updated for 2026 policies.
Why selling on Amazon India still wins in 2026
Amazon India clocked over ₹1.4 lakh crore in GMV last festive season. For any D2C brand, getting Amazon right is no longer optional — it's the single largest discovery and revenue channel outside your own website.
But the onboarding process trips up most first-time sellers. Categories get mis-applied, brand registries take months, and the wrong fulfillment choice can wipe out your unit economics.
This guide walks through everything you need to register and launch successfully on Amazon Seller Central in 2026.
Step 1: Documents you need before you start
Have these ready in PDF form before opening the registration page:
- GST Certificate — mandatory for all sellers except Books & Handicrafts
- PAN card (business or proprietor)
- Bank account proof — cancelled cheque or statement
- Trademark certificate — required for Brand Registry (highly recommended)
- Address proof for the registered seller location
- HSN codes for every product you plan to list
If you're a private limited or LLP, also keep your incorporation certificate and the authorized signatory's ID.
Step 2: Understand Amazon.in seller fees
Registering as a seller on Amazon.in is free and there is no monthly subscription plan (the Individual and Professional plans belong to Amazon.com in the US). On Amazon India you pay per order:
- Referral fee: a percentage of the selling price that depends on the category.
- Closing fee: a fixed fee per item based on its price band.
- Shipping or weight-handling fee: for Easy Ship and FBA orders, based on weight, size and distance.
- GST is charged on these fees, and you can usually claim it back as input tax credit.
A+ Content and Sponsored Brands need Amazon Brand Registry, which requires a registered or applied-for trademark. Model your margin per SKU with our marketplace fee calculator before you set prices.
Step 3: Pick the right category
This is where most sellers slip. Some categories (Beauty, Health, Grocery, Electronics) are gated — you'll need approval before listing. Apply for category access at the start, not after you've uploaded your catalog.
Common gated categories in 2026:
- Beauty & Personal Care
- Health, Household & Personal Care
- Grocery & Gourmet
- Watches
- Jewellery
- Toys
Submit invoices from authorized distributors when you apply. Approval takes 3–10 days.
Step 4: Set up Brand Registry
If you own a registered trademark, enroll in Amazon Brand Registry before listing a single SKU. Brand Registry unlocks:
- Protection from counterfeit listings
- A+ Content (rich product descriptions)
- Sponsored Brands ads
- Stores (your branded mini-site)
- Brand Analytics
Without it, you're competing on price alone.
Step 5: Decide your fulfillment model
You have three options:
FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) — send your inventory to Amazon's warehouse. Amazon handles storage, packing, shipping, returns and customer service. Best for fast-moving, high-margin products. Prime badge is automatic.
Easy Ship — you store the inventory; Amazon picks up from your location and delivers. Lower fees than FBA, slower delivery promise.
Self Ship — you handle everything. Lowest cost, but you'll lose Buy Box and Prime visibility for most categories.
Our recommendation: start with FBA on your top 5 SKUs. Use Easy Ship for long-tail.
Step 6: Build a winning listing
A great Amazon listing has:
- A title under 200 characters with primary keyword + brand + key specs
- 5 bullet points — benefit-led, not feature-dumps
- 7+ images: main on white, lifestyle, infographic, packaging, scale shots, comparison, and a video
- A description in HTML if you don't have Brand Registry, A+ if you do
- All backend search terms filled (250 bytes)
Use tools like Helium 10 or Junglescout for keyword research. Or skip the tools and have us do it for you.
Step 7: Launch with a soft promotion
Don't launch with deep discounts — Amazon penalizes deep discounting on day one. Instead:
- Run a Vine review program if eligible — get up to 30 honest reviews
- Set up a 5–10% coupon for the first 30 days
- Open Sponsored Products with a manual campaign on 8–10 exact-match keywords
- After day 30, start an auto campaign to harvest new keywords
Aim for 25+ reviews and 10+ orders per day before increasing ad spend.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Launching without Brand Registry — you'll lose your listing to hijackers within months
- Wrong HSN codes — leads to GST mismatches and tax notices
- One catalog, multiple variants under the wrong parent — torpedoes your search ranking
- Ignoring account health metrics — late shipments and order defect rate >1% trigger suspensions
How long does it take?
If your documents are clean, expect:
- Registration approved: 24–48 hours
- Category gating cleared: 5–10 days
- Brand Registry approved: 7–21 days
- First listing live: same day after approval
- First organic order: 3–14 days with ads
